Ye and Ty Dolla Sign will bring their Billboard #1 album “Vultures” listening experience, set against the backdrop of the iconic Saqqara Pyramids. The artist has confirmed his upcoming show on April 20th.
The event which will be part of Ye’s global tour is presented by Venture Lifestyle x Falcons in collaboration with 96X, the concert, as reported by SceneNoise, will feature Kanye West alongside four supporting acts.
Saqqara, located in the Giza Governorate of Egypt, is a village renowned for its ancient burial grounds, serving as the necropolis for Memphis, the capital of ancient Egypt. Notable features include the Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest complete stone building complex in history, and several other pyramids and mastaba tombs.
Over 16 Egyptian kings constructed pyramids in Saqqara, alongside private funeral monuments erected by high officials throughout the Pharaonic era. Saqqara remained significant for over 3000 years, even into Ptolemaic and Roman times, hosting non-royal burials and cult ceremonies.
Surrounding Saqqara are other pyramid complexes such as Abusir to the north and Dahshur to the south, forming the Pyramid Fields of Memphis, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite some speculation about its etymology, the name “Saqqara” may not be derived from the ancient Egyptian deity Sokar, but possibly from a local Berber tribe, although historical evidence for this tribe is lacking. Additionally, medieval sources refer to the village as “Ard as-Sadr” or “land of the buckthorn.”
Ye’s performance comes almost. year after The Musicians Syndicate cancelled Travis Scott’s performance at the pyramids, citing concerns about cultural identity and appropriateness. The syndicate claimed that Scott’s show contradicts Egyptian traditions and values according to Revolt. Past performers at the Pyramids include iconic acts like the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Mariah Carey, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers and even independent artist like Russ. Notably, the syndicate’s president had implemented new requirements in 2022 for rap performances, including the need for accompanying bands of authorized musicians.
West last global tour was for his Billboard #1 album Jesus Is King where he travelled with a gospel choir to cities all over the world including Jamaica’s Emancipation Park and conducted open air praise and worship meetings. He reportedly donated one million US dollars to the island upon his visit in October 2019.
