GNX serves as Lamar’s follow-up to Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers (2022), which topped the Billboard 200. The release comes after rumors about his career boosting feud with Drake and ahead of his performance at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in February 2025.
Lamar addresses Lil Wayne’s comments about the Super Bowl halftime show on his new album the first single, “Wacced Out Murals.” Wayne has expressed frustration over losing the opportunity to perform on social media and again at his annual Weezyana Fest. Now Lamar raps, “I used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hardworking let Lil Wayne down,” hinting at the rivalry. He continues, acknowledging that while he was congratulated by Nas, others were agitated by his Super Bowl selection, adding, “I’m just glad it’s on their faces.”
Lamar received seven Grammy nominations earlier in the month, 5 of which are directly related to “Not Like Us,” his diss track to Drake, Lil Wayne’s Protoje.
Kendrick’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 2023. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and became the first hip-hop album of 2022 to surpass one billion streams on Spotify. The album, which explores deep personal and societal issues, features collaborations with artists like Ghostface Killah, Kodak Black, and Taylour Paige. The standout track “We Cry Together” sparked widespread discussion for its raw portrayal of relationships and societal struggles. Lamar’s partner, Whitney Alford, contributed to the narrative of the song. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers earned multiple Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Lamar also won Best Rap Song for his writing on “The Heart Part 5.”
