Koffee’s Gifted Billboard Chart Numbers Are In

Koffee

Colombia/RCA recording artist Koffee debuts at number 2 on the Reggae Billboard charts with 3500 total units sold in the US in the first week. The album did 700 in total album sales and 3,290,800 streams. This follows Koffee’s number 9 debut on the UK top 100 albums chart.

The album landed at number 5 on the UK physical albums chart and that gives Koffee the distinction of being the first female Jamaican to make the UK albums chart top ten.

Other women of Jamaican descent to climb the UK albums chart are Stefflon Don and Diana King.

Stefflon’s 2018 album Secure peaked at 35 and Diana King’s 1995 album Tougher Than Love peaked at number 50 on the top 100 chart.

Since Koffee came on the scene she has gotten a lot of label support. After winning the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2020, John Fleckenstein, co-president of RCA said to Rolling Stones “Koffee’s success continues, it’s not gonna end in Jamaica. It’s gonna end on a global level.“

Gifted has also lands at No. 11 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, which ranks the sales by new and developing musical recording artists each week.

This is Koffee’s second entry on the weekly sales and streaming-driven Reggae Albums chart. Her Rapture EP debuted at No. 1 on March 30, 2019.

The UK’s Top 100 biggest artist albums of the week is compiled by the Official Charts Company, based on sales of CDs, downloads, vinyl and weighted audio streams.

The singer shared live performances of Shine, Runaway and Where Im From recently.

Elsewhere on the Billboard top reggae albums chart dancehall princess Shenseea comes in at number 4 on t with Alpha, selling another 1800 units with a total of 2,120,000 streams. Alpha has now sold 9300 total since her number 2 debut at on the chart.

Legend The Best Of Bob Marley And The Wailers remains the number 1 album with 11,300 units and

10, 517,000 streams.

Sean Paul appears twice on the chart with Mad Love The Prequel at number 9 and Dutty Classics Collection at number 4. Meanwhile Shaggy’s Boombastic Collection- Best of lands at number 3.

UB40’s Greatest Hits (1,500 units) compilation is at No. 6 followed by Stick Figure’s World On Fire (1,500 units) and Set In Stone (1,500 units) albums at No. 7 and 8, respectively.

Jewish-American Reggae singer Matisyahu has debuted at No. 10 on the chart this week with his 7th studio album, self-titled Matisyahu.  It moved 800 units from sales and streaming, including 500 copies in pure album sales.

Deluxe Strategy

Koffee released her debut LP Gifted last week with an accompanying Deluxe edition that featured eight additional tracks, including all the tracks from her 5-track Rapture EPRapture, released in 2019, had the turntable hit Toast which recorded over 50 million on-demand streams after she won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2020. Lockdown, West Indies, Pull Up, Shine, x10, Lonely and Gifted are the most streamed new songs on the album

Deluxe editions aren’t a new thing in music—for many years artists and labels have re-released albums with bonus content to extend the life of their projects and usually to mark one of the album’s milestones.

RCA Records, the same label to which Koffee is signed, decided to put 10 new Chris Brown songs to the beginning of his album Indigo and renamed the new, 42-song project Extended (Indigo).  Billboard reported that one of the new tracks, “Overtime”, drew 10 million Spotify plays, boosting the deluxe album from No. 13 to No. 6 on Billboard 200.

Billboard also reported that “This is a trend practiced by Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Rod Stewart, Lady Gaga and a slew of others have done this for years, on CDs and iTunes. But in the streaming world, the old-school “deluxe album” technique has a new benefit of extending the life of a hit release, even if it came out relatively recently.”

Another example of this industry crafting was Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts,” originally released in 2017, did not appear on her album Cuz I Love You in April 2019, but she added it to a deluxe version a month later and the song rose to No. 1 on the Hot 100, picking up record and song of the year Grammy nominations. Shawn Mendes, Young Thug and Kane Brown have followed a similar strategy; by adding bonus tracks to 2018’s Experiment, Brown was able to return the album to Spotify’s New Releases playlist months after.

RCA co-president John Fleckenstein, who has expressed professional  interest in Koffee’s career, said adding songs to a project “helps refresh and maintain interest in a current project.”

Koffee Gifted is currently number 1 in Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone and number 2 in Jamaica and Nigeria on Apple Music.
