Burna Boy’s summer hit “Last Last” has now sold more than 500,000 units in the U.S. The breakup anthem, which exploded after he first performed it at the Billboard Music Awards in May, samples Tony Braxton’s Darkchild produced “Wasn’t Man Enough.”
He will now earn RIAA certifications for songs from three (3) different Albums.
‘Ye’ from the album Outside (2018) was carried gold on May 3, 2021 and ‘On The Low’ from the album African Giant (2019) was certified gold earlier this year (April 26)
He is the First and Only African act to achieve this milestone.
Burna, real name Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, release his album Love, Damini (2022) which spawns Last Last and stopped by the Million Dollars Worth Of Game Podcast where he shared the information about how the Braxton sample came about.
“I just wanted to use that sample, and I knew Chopstix (Producer) could do sumn crazy with it, so yeah, I just pointed that shit out and just take it from there , that’s one of the special creative processes ever,” he explained.
“But she is taking sixty percent of the shit,” he says with a huge grin. With the huge sample fee he hopes Toni Braxton will join him on tour for one of his shows.
“He Wasn’t Man Enough” was the lead single for Braxton’s third studio album, The Heat (2000), written by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Fred Jerkins III, LaShawn Daniels, and Harvey Mason, Jr. The song was released by LaFace Records on February 29, 2000.
It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and remained there for two weeks behind the classic “Maria Maria” by Santana featuring The Product G & B. In total it spent 37 weeks on the chart. It debuted at number five on the UK Singles Chart. Last Last gave Burna Boy his first top 20 UK Singles Chart hit.
Last Last has been top song on Apple Music Jamaica as well as 19 other countries for the last 15 weeks.
Burna Boy’s Love, Damini debuted at No. 2 on the U.K. Charts and debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 chart after selling 25,000 units in the United States in its first week. He has the distinction of having the highest charting album of all time by a Nigerian.
The African Giant also made the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time as a solo or lead artist, with Last Last entering at No. 86. and climbing 14 spots this week to No. 72.
He has ruled the U.S. Afrobeats chart with Last Last for 8 weeks. His other singles For My Hand feat. Ed Sheeran peaked at No. 2 and Toni Ann Singh featuring dancehall deejay Popcaan peaked at No. 14.
Burna’s fellow Nigerian hitmaker Wizkid to had his “Made In Lago” album certified gold (500,000) by the RIAA as of August 25.
Released October 30, 2020, the P2J executive produced project became the first African album to be certified Gold in USA (500,000). The deluxe edition was released on 27 August 2021 and features additional guest appearances from Buju and Justin Bieber.
