Lauryn Hill surprised fans at the 2024 staging of Reggae Sumfest when she stepped on stage minutes after 1:00 am during her son YG Marley’s set.
The “Miseducation” singer revealed that her song “Lost Ones” was recorded in Jamaica at 56 Hope Road.
She then went into “Killing Me Softly,” which elicited an encore from the audience who became her personal choir as she shouted to the band, “the bridge to the bridge,” bringing a similar Coachella set to the island, seamlessly transitioning into “Fu-Gee-La.”
This was Lauryn Hill’s first time performing at Reggae Sumfest in the festival’s 31-year history. She performed “Ready Or Not” before YG returned to sing his gold-selling single “Praise Jah in the Moonlight.”
Seemingly not ready to leave the stage, Lauryn Hill, cued by MC Pretty Boy Floyd, started singing “Turn Your Lights Down Low” a cappella style for an additional 2 minutes and 22 seconds to the delight of the crowd at Catherine Hall, Montego Bay.
Her other son, Zion Marley, and dancehall artist Jahshii had joined YG’s set earlier.
Lauryn’s last performance in Jamaica was in 9-Mile, St. Ann, for the concert celebration in honor of Joseph ‘Jo Mersa’ Marley on March 9, 2024.
Earlier in the night new artist Armanii gave a commendable debut performance. The Fiesta artist said in preparation for his big night he was nervous and had not eaten all day. “Me nuh eat nuh food today,” he said.
Armanii is now the face of a new commercial with telecoms company Flow and he added, “great feeling big up flow, just a great feeling once they say this youngster is in alignment with our brand, just went towards work together and do it.” The newcomers revealed that his mother is a deacon and he built his singing skills in the church. “Praise and worship leader man when from me young.”
