Mariah Carey is facing yet another lawsuit regarding her beloved Christmas classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. This time, it comes from two individuals, Andy Stone and Troy Powers, who assert that they authored a song with the same title.
Andy Stone and Troy Powers are seeking damages of at least $20 million from Mariah over her song, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Interestingly, this song shares its name with their 1989 holiday composition.
TMZ reports that this new lawsuit closely resembles last year’s legal action. In the previous suit, Stone accused Mariah of copying their track, especially after their song gained substantial airplay and even appeared on the Billboard charts during the 1993 Christmas season.
According to the recently acquired documents by TMZ, Stone and Powers argue that there are significant resemblances in the lyrics, melody, and overall atmosphere when comparing their original song to Mariah’s version. They also claim that Mariah presented their work as her own, which they find incredulous.
The re-released version of Mariah’s All I Want For Christmas music video, has surpassed 422 million views on YouTube.
This song, is a single from Carey’s 1994 album “Merry Christmas.” Mariah co-wrote and produced the song alongside Walter Afanasieff. It was released as the lead single from the album on October 29, 1994, via Columbia Records. The track is an upbeat love song featuring elements like bell chimes, background vocals, and synthesizers. It has received critical acclaim, with The New Yorker hailing it as “one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon.” The song has become a Christmas classic, growing in popularity each December.
It has sold 16 million copies worldwide and upon its initial release, the song reached number six on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart in the United States and achieved the second position in the United Kingdom and Japan. Thanks to music streaming platforms, the song experiences renewed success each holiday season, topping charts in over 25 countries. It holds records for the longest gap between release and reaching number one in both the United States and the United Kingdom, at 25 and 26 years, respectively. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has sold 16 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling digital singles of all time. In 2023, it was chosen by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Recording Registry.
The song’s creation began after the success of Mariah’s 1993 album, “Music Box.” She and her team at Columbia Records decided to work on a Christmas album, although it was unusual at the time. Mariah and her long-time songwriting partner, Walter Afanasieff, began writing and composing songs for “Merry Christmas” in mid-1994. The song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was recorded in August of the same year, taking only 15 minutes to write and compose.
In 2022, Afanasieff disputed Mariah Carey’s claim that she composed the song by herself, stating that she handled the melodies and lyrics, while he was responsible for the music and chords.
