Masicka Says He Wants To ‘Cross over’ and Become ‘One of the Greatest Dancehall Artists in History’

Masicka was in a talkative mood during an interview with Major Stage released on Tuesday. The Onesyde DJ revealed a few key facts about himself and delivered a performance of his latest single Tyrant ahead of the release of his Def Jam debut album.

He was asked what was his favorite movie to which he responded the 80s classic Scarface starring Al Pacino. The Portmore artist says he wants to be known as a “great dancehall artist, a great father, a great friend, a great human being and most of all a great musician.”

Describing his music he said, “Totally different, above average and unique.”

“Started music from high school, knocking desk, chilling with my friends, we grew up listening to Bounty Killer and Beenie Man.”

He credits his municipality Portmore for helping to hone his craft, highlighting the Gold selling acts from the community. “A lotta talented artist come from Portmore, Vybz Kartel and Gyptian, definitely coming from Portmore with lotta lyrical artists that shaped how me put together mi metaphors, the wordplay because Portmore represent lyrics on a whole different level.”

Masicka says “family” motivates him, “trying to be a better person, trying to create a better way for my family, that drives one hundred percent” He adds that his father is the most inspirational person in his life.

In Ten years the 438 deejay wishes to “cross over” and “make it big” as “one of the greatest dancehall artists in history.”

A direction he is headed towards if he can repeat the success of his independent album 438 which features Stefflon Don, Popcaan, Dexta Daps and Sean Paul. The album has spent more than a year in the top ten on Apple Music Jamaican since its release peaking at No. 1 several times.

438 won Best Dancehall Album at the revamped 2023 Caribbean Music Awards edging out Spice “Emacipated”, Skeng’s EP “Beast Of The Era,” “In Too Deep” By Kranium and “Scrocha”by Sean Paul.

The album was the most streamed project by a male dancehall artist in the U.S. released over a 12 month period 2021-2022 according to data provided to World Music Views by Billboard sales tracker Luminate with 32,600 equivalent album units (SEA,TEA).

“Same thing weh we always a come with good music, we have a studio full a music. In truth we have an album, a finish project, done and complete, the fans them can look out for that. I can tell you she it’s far better than 438 and this a sum wet the fans them can look out for,” Masicka said about his upcoming project set for release on Def Jam Records.
