“Limelight” by Masicka has surged to No. 1 on Apple Music in Jamaica. The song, written and produced by Masicka himself along with Atto Wallace and Mario Hemmings, was released on Friday, November 10, via Def Jam Records. This marks Masicka’s third single under the new deal with the Manhattan-based record company, preceding his major label debut album.
The track has also claimed the top spot on Apple Music in Antigua, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, and No. 1 on iTunes in Dominica. While on Spotify “Limelight” has surpassed 29 thousand streams so far.
The accompanying music video, directed by popular dancehall videographer Ruption (real name Rogen Walker), is now the top trending music video on YouTube in Jamaica after earning just over 275,243 local streams in the last two days and 700,000 streams globally.
In the video, Masicka is seen in a bush bungalow in the green rural St. Andrew hills of Jamaica, cutting his grass and pruning his trees in a contemplative mood and dressed as a farmer in overalls, boots and sun hat. Towards the end he gets dressed in full black and drives his 2023 Porsche towards Kingston city. His No. 2 Billboard plaque is visible throughout the video, earned from his last album, “438.”
“438” holds the record as the longest-charting album on Apple Music Jamaica of all time, consistently in the top ten every day since its release, peaking at No. 1 several times. It stood as the most successful dancehall album in the US over the 12-month period in 2022.
The album won Best Dancehall Album at the revamped Caribbean Music Awards held in Brooklyn New York two months ago.
Elsewhere, “Limelight” holds the following positions: #2 in Grenada, #3 in Saint Kitts and Nevis, #6 in Guyana, #8 in the Cayman Islands, #20 in Turks and Caicos, and #68 in Dominica on Apple Music. The song also secures the No. 4 spot on the Deezer Jamaica daily chart.
In a since-deleted tweet posted on Friday, Masicka stated that his upcoming album will be his best. However, the album is yet to receive a release date, an announced title, or a track-list.
Meanwhile 450 leads YouTube Jamaica’s weekly chart for the week ending November 9, 2023 with “Wild n Rich.” The song earned just over 400,000 streams on the island edging out Kraff Gad’s “Rum Behavior” at No. 2 and Pablo YG’s “Rich N Richer” at No. 3.
Chronic Law’s “Still Dark” enters the weekly chart at No. 4 while Najeerii’s Paddle Boat slips to No. 5, opening 19 weeks on the chart and peaking at No. 1 for two weeks.
