Meta has announced a new multi-year licensing deal with Warner Music Group (WMG), covering both Warner’s recorded music and Warner Chappell publishing operations across all of Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, Threads, and WhatsApp for the first time. This partnership will provide additional promotion and marketing support for Warner’s artists and songwriters, as well as ongoing discussions around generative AI content on Meta’s platforms. A spokesperson for WMG expressed their satisfaction with the renewal, stating, “We’re pleased to have renewed our deal with Meta, expanding opportunities for artists and songwriters across all their platforms, and furthering our discussions on the potential of AI.”
In August, Meta also expanded its partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG), building on their landmark 2017 agreement that made UMG the first major music company to license its catalog across Facebook’s platforms. This multi-year agreement enhances creative and commercial opportunities for UMG artists and Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) songwriters. Tamara Hrivnak, VP of Music and Content Business Development at Meta, said, “We are thrilled to announce our renewal with Universal Music Group, and Universal Music Publishing Group, both of whom are innovators for music on social media… We’re extremely grateful to the Universal team, and look forward to growing our partnership in the future.”
Michael Nash, Chief Digital Officer & EVP at Universal Music Group, added, “Since our landmark 2017 agreement, Meta has consistently demonstrated its commitment to artists and songwriters by helping to amplify the importance music holds across its global network of engaged communities and platforms… We look forward to continuing to work together to address unauthorized AI-generated content that could affect artists and songwriters, so that UMG can continue to protect their rights both now and in the future.”
Together, these partnerships highlight Meta’s commitment to fostering relationships with major music entities while addressing the challenges posed by emerging technologies like AI.
