You’ll now be able to add drip to your avatar in the metaverse as Meta is launching an Avatars Store where users can dress their avatars in designer threads.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that customers will be able to buy outfits from high-end fashion brands such as Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne.
The three brands will launch garments for Meta Avatars for purchase in the Meta shop soon which will be on the Meta owned social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.
“Its been a long year working on something that’s really, truly been a passion project,” said Eva Chen, the head of fashion partnerships at Meta. Joined on Instagram live by Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, Chen unveiled each potential new look on a print-out for Zuckerberg to respond to, showcasing how seamlessly runway fashion could translate to Meta avatars. “This is probably the only fashion show that I will ever be near,” said the founder with a laugh.
The price point is nowhere near the real life cost with items ranging from $2.99 to $8.99. If you find yourself unwilling for fork out a few dollars for the designs, the store will offer hundreds of free outfits as well.
The customizable avatars are meant to act as a visual representation of a user on their social media accounts.
The billionaire CEO said the marketplace will allow creators to design and sell clothing. “A huge part of how people express themselves is through what they wear,” he said during the Instagram Live event.
To make an Avatar on Instagram, users can tap on their profile picture, go to edit profile, and then navigate to the “create avatar” option at the top.
In a press release, Balenciaga CEO Cédric Charbit said the partnership could create new territories for the luxury market. “When Meta tweeted “Hey @Balenciaga, what’s the dress code in the metaverse?” we were instantly into it,” Charbit said.
Of Balenciaga’s motocross leather look, Zuckerberg said, “Am I cool enough to wear that? … I do like racing things so I feel like if I was stepping out of a car or motorcycle that would be pretty sweet.” Balenciaga’s logo hoodies, also shown on avatar, might appeal to the hoodie-devoted guy too.
Of Prada’s white Linea Rossa nylon ensemble, which Chen mocked up on Zuckerberg’s avatar, he said: “It does take a certain confidence to wear shoulders-to-toes Prada. I think in the metaverse I may just have that confidence.” If Zuckerberg were to ever wear a suit, he guarantees that it would be a Thom Browne, with its sporty stripes and buttoned-up fit.
The Meta Avatars Store will launch in the next few weeks in the US, Canada, Thailand, and Mexico on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
