Nicki Minaj Brings Out Skillibeng At Drake’s Ovo Fest Young Money Reunion In Toronto

Skillibeng finally gets to perform with Nicki Minaj after she hopped on a remix of his Crocodile Teeth song last year. The remix earned Skilli his first Hot 100 single when the song debuted at 100.

The Barbie Queen who has always had an affinity for reggae and dancehall music introduced Skillibeng to her millions of fans worldwide as she embraced the St. Thomas deejay on stage.

The two Caribbean stars performed Crocodile Teeth for the first time.

The Young Money Reunion concert may have gotten off to a slow start—two hours late to be exact—thanks to Lil Wayne being held up at the border, but nonetheless, fans were ecstatic to see the Big Three trio of Weezy, Drake, and Nicki Minaj together again at Toronto’s Budweiser stage on Saturday night. The evening was truly about giving Lil Wayne his flowers, and Drake and Nicki Minaj made sure that the Young Money founder felt their appreciation for giving them their careers.

After previously postponing the Young Money Reunion show that was scheduled for August 1 due to testing positive for COVID-19, Drake appeared to be in good health and even better spirits. Drizzy showed no signs of slowing down and gave a high-energy and triumphant performance alongside his Young Money family. But before he stood side-by-side with Nicki and Lil Wayne, he first gave the audience a taste of some of his newer songs including “Sticky” and “Jimmy Cooks.”

Skillibeng also performed his diaspora hit Whap Whap with the support of the Queen Of Hip Hop on stage.

Minaj also took time out to give a shoutout to Jamaica and the Jamaican people on the celebration of its 60th year of Independence. She posted on her Instagram story, “Kingston, Rema, Waterhouse Jungle, Barbie me have nuff Gyal innah bungle, Love you Jamaica, gwan Bad Spanish Town yea.”

Skillibeng, 25, has been enjoying the endorsement of top flight women artists across continents. In July platinum U.K. Jamaican rapper Stefflon Don joined the ‘Coke’ deejay on the Wireless Festival stage

Skillibeng says he believes he is the leader of this generation of dancehall artist,

“I think I am the leader of like the new generation, based off what stats are saying and shows,” he remarked during an interview On The Radar Radio.

“Alotta mah flows have been stolen, alot of my tactics that I teach in interviews have been stolen, I am not even saying tis been stolen,” he says with a pseudo America accent. Younger artist are taking my moves, taking my moves and doing what I teach them and i applaud them,” he continued.

“I am doing the work and it’s all about me doing the work, cause I have been doing the work over the years i been releasing alotta music. I been like putting in the work, bodies of work, I am the only person that like release a mixtape with 35 , 37 tracks going crazy,” he affirmed.

Last October Skillibeng dropped his second album Crocodile Teeth and music producer Johnny Wonder said Skillibeng will bridge the gap between dancehall and hip hop.

The album got disappointing reviews, but Wonder insisted that he is the one who will spark interest in dancehall again for North American markets and that Skillibeng’s presence in the music industry is the missing piece of the puzzle.

“Skillibeng is a great artist that bridge the gap”. Wonder proclaimed.

Since the “Brick Pon Brick” artist came on the scene a few years ago he has scored several international features with his catchy, slow rhymes including a remix of Whap Whap with French Montana and Fivio Foreign.

His first album released last June “The Prodigy: Ladies Only Edition” sold 25 copies in pure album sales in the United States in its first week, according to data provided to World Music Views by Luminate. Total consumption from pure album sales plus streaming equivalent albums was 300 units.

With a singular Billboard hit and handful of Jamaican YouTube No. 1s, the St. Thomas DJ has made successful tour stops in the U.K. and the US at the Wireless and Afropunk Festivals where he was well received by thousands of eager fans outside of his core base.
