No Reggae in Reggae Month: Jamaica’s YouTube Charts Show a Shift in Musical Preferences

Despite numerous events, concerts, and promotions centered around reggae music during the month of February in Jamaica, not a single reggae song made it onto the list of the top 20 most streamed songs on YouTube in Jamaica between January 28 and February 24, 2025. Instead, the chart is dominated by dancehall, hip-hop, Afrobeats, gospel, and even pop music, signaling a shift in local listening habits.

YouTube is the most used music streaming platform in Jamaica and for the month of February, the country saw over 15 million streams with the majority coming from Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine and St.James where the majority of Reggae Month events are held.

Leading the pack for the month of February is “Ballandor” by Jamal & Cash Code, which amassed 1.06 million views over the period. Following closely behind is “Balance” by Ayetian & DJ MAC, with 933K views, and “Time” by Jamal, securing the third spot with 832K views. Other notable entries include “Planet To Planet” by RajahWild & Cash Code (741K views) and “Whites” by Masicka (704K views), reinforcing the continued dominance of dancehall and trap-infused sounds on the island.

Interestingly, American R&B superstar Chris Brown secured a spot at number six with “Residuals,” garnering 692K views. Popcaan & Chronic Law’s collaboration, “Kick It Wid Myself,” brought in 659K views, proving that homegrown dancehall remains a favorite among Jamaican listeners. “Come Jesus Come” by CeCe Winans, which landed at number ten with 599K views is the only gospel song on the top 20 chart.

Other noteworthy inclusions are “Shake It To The Max (FLY)” by Ghanian singer Moliy & Silent Addy at No. 8 with 640K views , “1Db4L” by Skippa at No. 9 with 602K views, and “Harry Shut” by Squash at No. 11 with (531K views). Jah Vinci & Notnice’s “Scream” came in at number 12 with 505K views, while Skippa’s “Convoy” and “Black Rain” by DJ MAC, RaheemWiddiBook & Skeng both recorded 485K views.

Vybz Kartel, made the list at number 15 with “God Is The Greatest,” accumulating 483K views. Further down, “IKATION” by Kraff Gad and “Psalms” by Jamal each garnered 478K views. American rapper Rod Wave also made an impact with “25,” pulling in 475K views, and “Big Heart of Love” by Qyor followed closely at 473K views. Rounding out the list at number 20 is “Die With A Smile,” a collaboration between pop heavyweights Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars, which pulled in 444K views.
