On this day in 2001, the tribute concert celebrating the life and music of Bob Marley was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association OF America (RIAA) for selling five hundred thousand units in the U.S. Titled the “One Love: The Bob Marley All-Star Tribute,” the event was held on December 4, 1999 at Oracabessa St. Mary Jamaica with a host of rock, hip hop, R&B and reggae stars.

(Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)The 19 track all star line-up concert was originally aired on TNT and then released on DVD and VHS May 30 2000, showcasing and edited version of the electrifying performances and infectious energy that filled the venue that night.
With a runtime of 87 minutes, the concert takes viewers on a journey through Marley’s timeless catalog, delivering unforgettable renditions of his most beloved songs. From soulful ballads to upbeat anthems, the opening number, “Turn the Lights Down Low,” sets the tone with a mesmerizing performance by the incomparable Lauryn Hill. Other standout moments include Chrissie Hynde’s soulful rendition of “Waiting in Vain” and a captivating collaboration between Erykah Badu and Jimmy Cliff on “No Woman No Cry.”
The concert held on a rainy night with a packed audience also features powerful performances by Queen Latifah, Darius Rucker, Tracy Chapman, Busta Rhymes, and many more, each bringing their unique style and interpretation to Marley’s iconic songs. It remains the only time Chapman has ever performed in Jamaica.
“Redemption Song” Lauryn Hill and Ziggy Marley, The reggae-infused rendition of “Three Little Birds” by Tracy Chapman, And the grand finale, “One Love,” brought all the performers together on stage, symbolizing the unifying spirit of Bob Marley’s music.
It is the only concert held in Jamaica to be certified Gold by the RIAA.
