Pharrell Williams’ innovative LEGO biopic, Piece By Piece, is set for an early digital release just two weeks after a modest performance in theaters. Opening on October 11, the animated documentary about Williams’ life and career has grossed only $8 million against a $16 million budget, according to Forbes. Now, starting October 29, fans can access Piece By Piece via premium video-on-demand.
Directed by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville, Piece By Piece presents Pharrell’s journey from Virginia Beach to music superstardom through LEGO-styled animation. It covers his early friendships with Virginia legends like Pusha T, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, and his Neptunes collaborator Chad Hugo, alongside cameo appearances from animated LEGO versions of icons like Jay-Z, Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, and Daft Punk.
The swift shift to digital is likely due to a declining box office, with an opening weekend take of $3.8 million and only $752,000 the following weekend. Piece By Piece will be available for purchase at $24.99, while a 48-hour rental will be priced at $19.99.
Pharrell shared his inspiration for the LEGO documentary with NPR, reflecting on his love for LEGO as a child. “Whether you build the set as designed or just put pieces together… it’s just magical,” he said.
