As of September 28, 2023, dancehall star Popcaan has surpassed 1.5 billion streams on Spotify across all credits.
The Ovo artist has carved a space for himself in the world of music, coming a long way from the country streets of Saint Thomas Jamaica.
Popcaan, real name Andre Sutherland emerged on the scenes by releasing several cuts with Vybz Kartel and working with Adidjaheim Productions, and NotNice who produced his early hits like “Gal Wine,” “Clarks” (featuring Kartel and Gaza Slim), “It Nuh Work So,” “Jah Jah Protect Me,” “Gangsta City,” “Dream,” “Gangsta City Part Second,” and “Hot Grabba.”
The Unruly deejay got breakthrough in 2010 with the seminal street and radio hit “Clarks,” with Kartel which placed him on the track to became a international sensation as the song directly impacted the sales of the celebrated British shoe. Subsequently he won Best New Artist- Male and Collaboration of the Year at the The Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards for “Clarks.”
In 2012 he released the debut mixtape “Yiy Change,” and in March, and “Only Man She Want” earned him his first Billboard entry on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, later remixed by Busta Rhymes.
Popcaan’s career continued to ascend as he toured Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, and South America. During his time in Canada, he forged a connection with rapper Drake. In 2013, Popcaan released the video for “Unruly Rave,” shot in Toronto.
In 2014, the former Gaza Empire artist signed with Mixpak Records and released his debut studio album, “Where We Come From.” The album’s first single, “Everything Nice,” entered the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart at number 2.
A bonafide music ambassador for Jamaica, Popcaan graced the cover of The Fader in June 2014 and collaborated with Melissa Steel on the UK hit “Kisses for Breakfast.” He received MOBO Awards nominations and secured victories in 2015 and 2016.
The artist’s international presence grew to become one of the most tin demand dancehall artist for features as he took on Hip Hop tracks like Jamie xx’s Canadian Platinum single “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)” featuring Young Thug (80,000) and AlunaGeorge’s “I’m in Control.” His unofficial collaboration with Drake on “Controlla” further propelled his global stardom.
Popcaan’s second album, “Forever,” released in July 2018, debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and has over 150 alum streams on Spotify alone. The OVO Sound and Warner Records release has sold 122,000 units of streams and sales in the US according to data proving to WMV by Luminate. Of that amount, the album has earned 183 million on-demand streams and sold 7000 pure copies.
Subsequent releases, including “Vanquish” (2019) and “Fixtape” (2020) which has sold 100,000 album equivalent units in the U.S. since its release on August 7, 2020, showcased Popcaan’s versatility and garnered attention with tracks like “All I Need” and “Twist & Turn” featuring PartyNextDoor. He has sold over 1 million albums in the U.S.
Popcaan fourth studio album, “Great Is He,” under OVO Sound debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
