Jamaican recording artist Robert Lee Malcolm popularly known as Gully Bop has died. The dancehall deejay who also went by the name Country Man became a viral sensation after a freestyle video of him emerged on the internet singing in a gully.
Bop was born on May 30, 1964 in Jamaica and was known for local stage show hits like Body Specialist. The persona was no stranger to the ups and downs of fame. Once a rising star in the dancehall music scene, he has recently found himself back in the spotlight, albeit for entirely different reasons. Gully Bop’s life has taken a tumultuous turn as severe health challenges and financial woes have pushed him into a state of destitution. He made a heartfelt appeal via social media personality and humanitarian Donna ‘Aunty Donna’ Growe for help.
Pastor Chris Tate, of El’Shaddai Prophetic Ministries, along with Aunty Donna’s used their influential platform to raise much-needed funds for the entertainer who was grappling with kidney disease. Bop died at the Kingston Public Hospital on Tuesday according to Television Jamaica.
Malcolm told the Jamaica Star in August that he had undergone surgery at the Kingston Public Hospital 18 months before, followed by a kidney transplant a year ago. Although he received a new kidney, his health did not fully recover, and he was relying on medical bags.
