BIA dropped her nine-song EP “REALLY HER,” last Friday (July 28, 2023) and track six on the project “Oh No”, contains a sample of “Tight Up Skirt” by dancehall artist Red Rat.
Red Rat’s original vocals can be heard singing “Hey you girl inna the tight up skirt” and “Oh No” on the chorus of the Lil Rich produced song as BIA blends her raps seamlessly in a dancehall groove.
The track “Tight Up Skirt” was released in 1997 on Mad Lion Riddim. It was produced by DJ Buccaneer. In 2021, the song was the subject of a $US1.5M lawsuit (now settled) against Chris Brown and Sony Records.
Following its initial release, “Tight Up Skirt” was included on Red Rat’s album “Oh No… It’s Red Rat,” which Greensleeves released on August 27 1997. Over the years the track has been sampled by several artists, including “Tight Skirt” by Samantha J in 2012. Talib Kweli dropped the line “hey you girl in the tight up skirt” on the single “Outstanding” with Z-Trip feat. Ryan Leslie from his 2012 album Attack The Block.
BIA, who is from Massachusetts latest EP is led by the singles “London” and “l’m That B**ch. The Epic Records project also features collaborations with Juicy J, Swizz Beatz, J. Cole, and Timbaland.
In the music video for “MILLIONS,” produced by AzizTheShake and Tim Nihan, BIA shows off her sex appeal and performance skills. NeNe Leakes also makes a cameo appearance.
“REALLY HER” follows BIA’s 2020 EP “FOR CERTAIN,” which reached the top 40 on the Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A deluxe version of “FOR CERTAIN” was released later with additional tracks and featured collaborations with Sevyn Streeter, G Herbo, and Nicki Minaj on the remix of “Whole Lotta Money.”
In 2019 Rihanna posted “Best On Earth” by RUSS featuring BIA which helped to push the track’s popularity and earned the track a RIAA double Platinum certification for selling more than two million units.
In the past year, BIA has been featured on several notable tracks across different genres, such as David Guetta’s “Trampoline,” YG, Tyga, and 21 Savage’s “Run,” and Busta Rhymes’ “BEACH BALL.” Recently, she collaborated with Mass Appeal, Google Pixel, and Sony Music Entertainment for “Raised Me,” a remix of the Petey Pablo classic “Raise Up,” as part of the “Pixel RePresents” series celebrating hip hop’s 50th anniversary.
The 31 year old rapper has surpassed 1.5 billion streams on Spotify across all credits.
