MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Rapper Rick Ross was arrested in Miami Beach early Thursday and is facing domestic violence-related charges, including felony battery by strangulation.
Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts, was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at approximately 6:10 a.m. Thursday, according to Miami-Dade jail and court records cited by CBS Miami.
The 50-year-old rapper faces one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor battery charge. Court records list both counts as involving domestic violence.
Bond was set at $5,000 for the felony charge and $1,000 for the misdemeanor charge, bringing the total to $6,000.
Court information indicates Ross has retained private attorney Bradley Horenstein. An arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 22.
Authorities had not immediately released details surrounding the alleged incident, including when or where it occurred or the nature of Ross’ relationship with the alleged victim.
The arrest follows separate public allegations made by Ross’ former girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick. According to People, Kendrick recently alleged on social media that Ross physically assaulted her and injured her lip during an incident she said occurred roughly a month earlier.
Ross had not publicly responded to those allegations at the time of the reports. It also remained unclear whether Kendrick’s allegations were connected to Thursday’s arrest.
CBS News Miami reported that it requested the arrest report from the Miami Beach Police Department as well as information from the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
Ross, a Miami-area native, rose to prominence with his 2006 hit “Hustlin’” and has remained a major figure in hip-hop for the past two decades.
The charges are allegations, and Ross has not been convicted in connection with the case.
