“Rockstar” by Lisa, becomes the biggest 24 hour debut on YouTube by a K-Pop act in 2024.
It is the number one music video on YouTube, surpassing 30 million views after 18 hours (and counting) since it was released 8 p.m. ET on June 27
Lisa first hinted at “Rockstar” at the beginning of June when she launched her TikTok account with a post featuring a snippet of the edgy new single and in the process setting a Guinness World Record for gaining a million followers in just two hours and 18 minutes. She later posted a second TikTok, teasing the song’s title with the distant refrain, “Baby, I’m a rock star.”
The release of “Rockstar” which samples ‘New Person, Same Old Mistakes’ by Tame Impala, marks Lisa’s first solo endeavor since signing with RCA Records, in partnership with her own LLOUD company, allowing her to retain ownership of her master recordings. Lisa debuted as a solo artist in September 2021 with her single album ‘LALISA’, and the music video for the title track earned 73.6 million within 24 hours. The YG Entertainment and Interscope Records release, also spawned the single “Money” which become the first solo K-pop hit to surpass a billion streams on Spotify in 2023.
The music video for “Rockstar,” showcases Lisa in the vibrant streets of Bangkok, Thailand. In this dance-driven visual spectacle, she delivers powerful lyrics: “Make your favourite singer wanna rap, baby, la, la / ‘Lisa, can you teach me Japanese?’ I said, ‘Hai, hai,’ / That’s my life, life, baby, I’m a rockstar.”
The song is co-written by Lisa alongside Ryan Tedder, Brittany Amaradio, James Essien, Lucy Healey, and Sam Homaee, also features a notable sample of Tame Impala’s “New Person, Same Old Mistakes.”
“Having made numerous achievements with her album to become a global pop artist, Lisa’s ‘Rockstar’ is expected to garner listeners’ attention, especially with the backing of RCA Records,” LLOUD said in a press release, according to Korea JoongAng Daily.
