Emerging Jamaican artist Rushawn has scored his first major chart-topping success with the release of his debut EP “WYHR – Why Y’all Hate Rushawn,” which soared to No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes Reggae Albums Chart within hours of its release on May 23.
The 13-track project, produced by Mr. Chin—a veteran of over 20 years in the music business—features standout cuts like the emotionally charged lead single “G”, and contributions from rising artists Critical and Jesse Royal, as well as Rushawn’s brother and collaborator Jelly. Mr. Chin, who is also Rushawn’s manager and a close family member, described the project as a deeply personal and career-defining moment.
“This is my first number one EP,” Mr. Chin shared in an exclusive interview. “We didn’t sleep. We just woke up and saw it went number one. It’s a blessing for the whole family.”
Rushawn, whose music blends raw emotion with roots reggae influence, channels a spirit of resilience and honesty throughout the EP. The title itself—Why Y’all Hate Rushawn—suggests a reclamation of criticism and a bold step into artistic confidence.
The project also marks Rushawn’s first-ever number one on iTunes and a breakthrough for Jelly, who headlines the EP’s title track. “G is a very powerful song,” Mr. Chin noted. “It’s the lead track for a reason—it sets the tone.”
With more singles set to drop soon, including collaborations with Kritical, Rushawn and his team are setting the foundation for what could be a powerful new chapter in modern Jamaican music.
As Mr. Chin sums it up: “It’s not just music—it’s family, talent, and passion all in one. And this is just the beginning.”
