Sean Paul’s eighth studio album, Scorcha, has surpassed 200 million streams on Spotify, his sixth album to reach the milestone.
The album, released on May 27, 2022, marked Sean Paul’s debut on Island Records after years of success with Atlantic/VP Records. It arrived nearly a year later than originally planned, following the independent release of his 2021 set Live N Livin, which was intended as a warm-up.
A Two-Year Rollout for Seven Singles
Unlike most modern releases that favor surprise drops or tight promotional windows, Scorcha unfolded over 27 months, with seven singles preceding the album’s launch:
-
“Calling On Me” (feat. Tove Lo) – February 7, 2020
-
“Scorcha” – December 11, 2020
-
“Only Fanz” (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) – August 12, 2021
-
“Dynamite” (feat. Sia) – October 22, 2021
-
“How We Do It” (feat. Pia Mia) – March 10, 2022
-
“No Fear” (feat. Damian Marley & Nicky Jam) – April 20, 2022
-
“Light My Fire” (feat. Gwen Stefani & Shenseea) – May 25, 2022
Despite the plethora of singles and collabs, the album debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart with 1,700 equivalent album units, according to Luminate—far from blockbuster numbers but he secured a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album.
Streaming Success and Star Collaborations
What the album lacked in first-week sales, it has now made up for in streaming traction. Leading tracks include:

“Dynamite” with Sia (93.5 million streams)
-
“Calling On Me” with Tove Lo (64 million)
-
“Light My Fire” with Gwen Stefani & Shenseea (16.7 million)
-
“How We Do It” with Pia Mia (10.5 million)
With 16 tracks, the album explores dancehall, reggaeton, and Afrobeats, featuring an A-list cast: Damian Marley, Shenseea, Gwen Stefani, Sia, Ty Dolla $ign, Pia Mia, Jada Kingdom, Nicky Jam, and Stylo G.
Critical Reception
Scorcha earned generally favorable reviews. World Music Views rated the album 3.9 out of 5, calling it “a digestible serving of upscale dancehall music.” The review praised its strong production and versatility, noting:
“Every song on Scorcha is hot and potentially a radio hit. He makes radio good songs, but in the streaming era, catchy choruses and impromptu ad-libs may not be enough to ride the waves on TikTok.”
The review also highlighted Sean Paul’s cultural authenticity, writing:
“On every track Sean deliberately uses culturally specific terms and lyrics like ‘scotch bonnet pepper’ to emphasize how hot he is. It keeps him close to the people of Jamaica without having to be overly street or gangster.”
With over 200 million Spotify streams and a Grammy nod, the album is another accomplishment for “the Godfather of Dancehall Pop.”
