“First I gotta give a shout-out to my country Jamaica real quick, Billboard Wah Gwan” Shenseea says as she graces the Billboard Music awards stage for the first time.
With her Jamaican accent standing out, the Run Run singer presented the Pepsi Mic Drop Award to Glass Animals for their chart topping Billboard hit, Heat Waves, at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The dancehall artist attended the event with her son Rajiero. Who donned a dapper jacket, bow tie and sunshades on the white carpet.
While on the awards show’s white carpet the Jiggle Boss told Tetris Kelly of Billboard Magazine that she has a song on the way with Diddy.
“We’re working on something, I mean I am a person who just likes to show my work, instead of just talking about it so you just have to stay tuned to be honest.”
Back in April Shenseea was spotted in studio with multi-platinum producer Sean “Diddy” Combs via an instagram post by the dancehall princess’s label A&R @Dizzycleanface.
Dizzy posted several pictures of the two in the recording booth with the caption: “Sometimes you have to start over and come back harder @shenseea can’t stop won’t stop @diddy 🙏🏾”
Shenseea also had words of encouragement for Travis Scott who has not been seen on global stages since his Astroworld tragedy. She said he was one of the persons she was most looking forward to seeing.
“I mean everybody for some point in their life where they gotta get back up, so I am just glad that he is coming out here and showing out again,” she said. “Instead of you know, hiding away,” she continued.
The night’s biggest winners at the Billboard Music Awards were Olivia Rodrigo and Kanye West who weren’t in attendance, but Doja Cat walked away with four Awards, winning two in person on the live telecast in Las Vegas.
Olivia Rodrigo was the night’s biggest winner with seven awards for her first BBMAs and Kanye West took six awards, Drake got five awards, which makes him the most Billboard Awarded artist with 34 wins. The Kid Laroi, won his first five awards for Stay with Justin Bieber.
Megan Thee Stallion took home the top female rap artist award. In addition to their Pepsi Mic Drop Moment for “Heat Waves,”Glass Animals was also named top rock artists.
Dan + Shay won the award for top country duo/group, while ILLENIUM won top dance/electronic album for Fallen Embers.
Janet Jackson presented Mary J. Blige with the Billboard Icon Award.
Doja Cat won the award for Top R&B Artist for her album Planet Her, beating out GIVĒON, Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak), Summer Walker and The Weeknd. This came as a surprise for many as her album is classified as pop on iTunes and spawns several hip hop and experimental songs including five singles: “Kiss Me More“, “You Right“, “Need to Know“, “Woman“, and “Get Into It (Yuh)“. The first four songs all charted within the top 15 of both the Billboard Hot 100.
Planet Her released by the rapper and singer by Kemosabe and RCA Records is titled after a fictional planet created by Doja. She said her musical style’s shift in the record to traveling outside of Earth and into outer space.
