Ska Music Takes Center Stage In BBC’s “This Town” Series

Steven Knight, the creative mind behind Peaky Blinders, unveils a tantalizing glimpse into his latest project, “This Town,” a series set to explore the vibrant ska scene of the 1980s according to GQ Magazine. The acclaimed writer for SAS Rogue Heroes, Knight’s upcoming venture promises to be a compelling family saga against the backdrop of the burgeoning ska movement.

“This Town,” slated to be a major drama for the BBC, delves into the lives of an extended family and four young individuals entangled in the world of ska and two-tone music.

Two-tone, also known as ska-rock or ska revival, emerged in late 1970s and early 1980s Britain, blending traditional Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae with elements of punk rock and new wave music. Named after 2 Tone Records, founded by Jerry Dammers of the Specials, it aimed to address racial tensions in Thatcher-era Britain, featuring racially diverse groups like the Specials, the Selecter, and the Beat. Originating in Coventry, England, it was part of ska’s second wave and influenced the ska punk movement in the U.S.

“Music is at the heart of the series,” says Marc Robinson, co-president of Mercury Studios. “We are thrilled to be able to creatively engage artists and help tell the story through new and original recordings.”

Beyond its musical elements, “This Town” promises to blend elements of high-octane thrillers and familial dramas against the backdrop of societal unrest in 1981. As the characters navigate their paths amid the chaos, music emerges as a beacon of hope and redemption, offering them a chance at second opportunities.

The series pays homage to the era’s iconic tunes, with a soundtrack curated to evoke the spirit of the time. Spearheaded by Mercury Studios, the production promises a rich tapestry of original recordings, immersing audiences in the era’s cultural milieu.

Leading the cast are David Dawson and Michelle Dockery, known for their versatility in portraying diverse roles. Joining them are Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger, Ben Rose, and Eve Austin, who bring youthful energy and depth to their characters.

While an exact release date remains undisclosed, filming commenced in November 2022, with a tentative air date set for 2024.
