The Likkle Miss deejay’s Lawyer Christopher Townsend, speaking exclusively with World Music Views said, “The matter was set down for mention for the prosecution to complete their disclosure and their file. The footage that we were asking for they edited out a very important piece of it. The important piece that was edited out is where Skeng was pepper sprayed and that was cause for concern. We contend that you never needed to pepper spray us any at all. We were disappointed but not surprised.”
In May World Music Views reported that Skeng and his entourage were on their way to Trinidad when an argument developed between airport security and the Protocol artist.
“Head of communications at the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Dennis Brooks in confirmed the arrest and charge with World Music Views said at the time,
“We can confirm that 21 year old recording artist Kevaun Douglas o/c “Skeng” was removed from a flight at the Norman Manley International Airport at about 1:50 pm this afternoon. Our information is that this happened after he started behaving disorderly during an argument.“
He said Skeng was charged for Disorderly Behavior and Resisting Arrest. He was offered bail and is to appear before the court on June 21, 2022. That appearance was adjourned to today September 8.
Following today’s adjournment Townsend said, “Separate and a part it was a joint application for the adjournment. The Crown has not had a chance to view the video though they are the ones that served it on us. What we want is a sight of the full unedited footage of the video.”
The Video
“From what I see in the video, to be fair there could really be apologies all around. What happened was the situation got out of hand and by the time the police had gotten there the situation was way out of hand and you could see that on the video,” Townsend continued.
He contends that the entire situation seems to have been a misunderstanding and suggests that the airport employees improve their customer service training.
“You could see that the behavior of the security was less than what was expected. You have to place persons in these sensitive areas who can manage customer relations but still enforce order, but have to know you are talking to people and be respectful,” he said.
On whether or not there is any liability on either side he said,
“Its not a question of truth or lie its an interpretation on what you see, what you see is what Skeng was complaining about. It was disrespectful and taunting(to Skeng). The police are really complaining of being disrespected but the real question is who promoted it. Nobody goes to an airport to disrespect people. He was told that certain things could not be carried and you could see from the video that certain things were taken from him and given back to him.”
That certain thing he speaks of is a container of bleaching cream which the deejay was carrying. It is understood that was why the argument developed with Skeng and a member of the Port Security just before he was to board his flight.
“Everybody is really to take responsibility for what it is that they did and there should really be apologies all around. If there are apologies to be made Skeng is prepared to do just that because overtime common sense and maturity prevail,” Townsend said.
The veteran lawyer is hopeful that things will be more clear at the next court appearance.
“We are hoping they will provide us with the full footage and not the edited version. We just want the full document so that between the prosecution and ourselves we can look at it. It’s not about what Skeng says or the police say. What our court system is engaged in is the resolution of problems.”
Nicki Minaj and Skeng recently shot a music video in New York City for their U.S. iTunes top ten banger “Likkle Miss” (Remix); the two met for the first time face to face and Minaj posted a video on her instagram with instructions to go listen to their song to her 200 million instagram followers. In the caption she posted both the Trini and Jamaican flags.
In the video Skeng is seen sporting a full Fendi print suit, a brand linked to the Hip Hop Queen. In October 14th 2019, Nicki Minaj and Fendi released a clothing collaboration called “Fendi Prints On”, a line from Nicki’s song ‘Chun Li’ from her 2018 Queen album. The clothing line consists of a female collection as well as a male collection. The full collection worth over $10M was sold out online within a week.
During Minaj’s acceptance speech at the 2022 MTV VMAs as she collected the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, The Queen of Hip Hop thanked a slew of people who ‘inspired her flow’ and ‘gave her huge opportunities.” Among them she thanked “Beenie Man and all of Jamaica” and gave a shout out to Skeng onsage.
Likkle Miss Remix peaked at No. 2 on the iTunes Hip Hop/Rap charts. It is Skeng’s first song to reach that milestone.
Skeng has the two most streamed songs of all time in Jamaica and he recently signed a publishing deal with Jon Baker’s Geejam Publishing.
