South African singer Tyla has mined Gold for her eponymous debut album in Canada.
According to Music Canada, Tyla was issued the Gold Single certification on Tuesday, July 23, after it sold more than 40,000 units from digital and physical single sales and on-demand audio streaming in the country. In Canada, units for Album Awards are calculated as TEA: 10 track downloads = 1 unit toward Certification and SEA: 1500 on-demand audio streams = 1 unit toward Certification.
The 14 track set released March 24, 2024 via Fax/ Epic Records features Kelvin Momo, Tems, Gunna, Skillibeng, Becky G and Travis Scott with most of the tracks recorded at Miloco (London), Geejam (Port Antonio), SessionsAtlanta (Atlanta), ACP (Cape Town), Criteria (Miami), Sarm (London), Home Away From Home (Los Angeles), Just For The Record (Los Angeles) and Sony studios (Los Angeles).
The album peaked at No. 26 on the Canadian Albums Chart and No.24 on the US Billboard 200, as she became the highest-charting solo African woman in Billboard 200 history.
On Spotify “Tyla” has surpassed 1.18 billion streams as of July 24, 2024 with the highest streaming song being her breakout hit “Water” surpassing 700 million streams.
The other officially promoted singles from the album are”Water” released 28 July 2023, “Truth or Dare” released February 13, “Art” released April 12 and “Jump” featuring Gunna and Skillibeng released May 14.
Producers on the 38 minutes and 29 seconds project include Sammy Soso, Believve, Rayan El-Hussein, Goufar, Alex Lustig, Sir Nolan, P2J, Manana, Christer, LuuDadeejay, Kelvin Momo.
Tyla is managed by Colin Gayle of Africa Creative Agency, and the company lead her into as Grammy win for the inaugural Best African Music Award Performance. Gayle attributes her success to strategic planning and hard work, emphasizing the significance of her achievements for African music. Tyla’s rise is seen as part of a legacy of influential African female artists like Miriam Makeba.
Gayle and his wife Yvette, both deeply connected to African music and culture, co-founded the Africa Creative Agency to support African creatives. They focus on global market strategies, starting with Europe before moving to other regions. Despite comparisons to Rihanna, Gayle stresses Tyla’s unique identity.
