Dancehall’s top female entertainer Spice has released the first single from her third studio album Mirror 25 titled “2085 Tea,” and the video has an old but familiar inspiration.
The song set in the future, when 41 year old Spice will be 102 years old reflects on conflicts, the father of her children, industry drama and achievements including her platinum certification in Canada.
Spice became the first Jamaica born woman to be certified Platinum in Canada when her song Go Down Deh featuring Shaggy and Sean Paul surpassed sales of 80,000 units in combined streams and sales.
Spice posted an image of General Degree’s Granny released by VP Records in 1992 after Macka Diamond posted an image from her own ‘Granny Song’ fueling speculations that Spice jacked her style.
General Degree’s Granny was produced by Danny Browne and recored when he was sonly 24 years old. He told a podcast in 2020 that he begged Browne not to release the song as he was not proud of the breakout tune initially. However the song became a hit and Degree also did a followup version the same year with Papa San titled Granny Cry produced by Browne and distributed by Dynamic Sounds.
The music video for ‘2085 tea,’ directed by JD Productions, features Spice made up, dressed up and using the voice of an older person drinking tea and sharing “untold truths.”
The Keron “Yow Levite” Young produced track is released via Spice Official Entertainment, in partnership with top independent Record label Empire.
Spice was signed to VP Records for ten years before she released her debut album ’10’ after making a deal with Shaggy to executive produce the set.
