Squash Charts In 9 Countries On Apple Music Amidst Immigration Arrest

Dancehall deejay Squash has four songs charting in 9 countries the Caribbean on Apple Music in light of his arrest in Florida by Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents (ICE). Squash was picked up by agents on Monday (May 22) and taken to a Miami Processing Center according to documents.

The “Ambala” artist who is also known as the Sixx Boss was previously detained during a State Of Emergency in Jamaica  back in 2018 where he spent 5 months behind bars without charge.

During that year he received 9 million YouTube streams across his catalogue. Squash is currently the 8th most streamed artist on YouTube in Jamaica with 48.6 million streams over the last year according to YouTube’s chart insights.

Althgouh the the St. James deejay got his musical break in Jamaica after his Trending song was released in 2018, he seems to have left Jamaica with no intentions of returning to his homeland. He told Winford Williams of Onstage in an interview conducted in Florida that there are negative elements in his circle. “Me love Jamaican but at the end of the day mi cyah tek e wul dung Winfud, and too much corruption run inna my likkle circle, Jamaica small bad enuh, farina big and the world big big, Jamaica very small and too much corruption deh inna one likkle environment and mi cyah deal wid it,” the Foot deejay said.

Squash’s ICE detention comes just days after the NAACP and several advocacy groups issued a no travel warning to people of color to the State OF Florida saying ‘Beware, your life is not valued,’ according to CNN.

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson told CNN on Monday that he cited the “new DeSantis-backed law allowing gun owners to carry a concealed weapon without a permit, as well as education policies that include a ban on teaching about gender identity and sexual orientation through 12th grade.”

LULAC – the League of United Latin American Citizens previously issued a warning saying “actions under the Florida Republican Governor DeSantis administration are “hostile” to their communities.” Both organizations also take issue with DeSantis’ new immigration law that will go into effect in July.
