One of the leading figures in the dancehall renaissance taking over the African continent is Stonebwoy.
The Ghanaian artist’s 17 track set “5th Dimension,” his 5th studio album and first in the new label arrangement with Def Jam Africa features British drill rapper Stormzy, Nigerian stars Davido, Oxlade, Tiwa Savage, Mereba, as well as Grammy winning Jamaican superstar Shaggy and Dexta Daps. The various influences on this album seems like a deliberate attempt to widen the BHIM artist’s international appeal after the 35 year old says he is on a mission to bridge the gaps between the west and African cultures with Afrobeats music.
Known for stirring controversy, he also made statements leading up to the release of the album that reggae comes from Africa. Half truths aside, the album showcases Stonebwoy’s ability to blend traditional reggae and African sounds with dancehall, modern pop and Afrobeats for a world music album.
Characterized by catchy toasts and melodies, coupled with infectious and digestible rhythms from producers Supa Dups, FanaTix, Gideonite, Streetbeatz, and Jugglerz, StoneBwoy’s uplifting lyrics touch on various themes giving the deejay relevance in a sea of stars.
One of the standout tracks on the album is “My Sound” featuring Jamaican megastar Shaggy. The
bouncy track has Shaggy endorsing the African-Jamaican connection.
“5th Dimension” is a strong showcase of Stonebwoy’s versatility and a an improvement to his discography.
