Surprise! I Love You is a Caribbean romantic-comedy short film from The LAB Studios Originals, bringing a fresh, playful take on modern love, long-distance expectations, and dating in Jamaica.
The story follows Imani, a spontaneous romantic who takes a leap of faith and flies to Jamaica for love. But after landing, she quickly discovers that romance doesn’t always follow the itinerary. What begins as a hopeful gesture turns into a series of unexpected twists, awkward encounters, and hilarious complications.
At the center of the story are Malik, calm, grounded and confident; Tasha, an unapologetic standards-setter who knows exactly what she wants; and Desi, whose place within the friend group adds another layer to the relationships, commentary and comedy surrounding Imani’s romantic adventure.
Blending Caribbean culture, cross-border romance and friend-group dynamics, Surprise! I Love You explores what happens when expectations built from a distance collide with reality. Through humor and relatable situations, the film touches on cultural adjustment, modern dating, romantic risk-taking and the sometimes uncomfortable gap between what we imagine love will be and what actually happens.
