SZA couldn’t contain her excitement after coming across a creative mashup pairing Buju Banton’s “Colors” freestyle with the beat from her fan-favorite track “Go Gina.”
The viral edit takes Buju’s vocals from his “Colors” freestyle and lays them over the smooth production associated with “Go Gina,” creating a combination that sounds surprisingly seamless.
After seeing the clip, SZA shared it to her Instagram Story with an enthusiastic reaction, writing: “GOOD MORNING THIS SHIT EAAAATSSSSSSSS OMG ???”
She also appeared in the comments of the post, adding: “AYOOOOO THIS MADE MY DAAAYYY AHHHHHH.”
While the clip may sound like Buju jumped on SZA’s record, it’s actually a fan-made remix rather than an official collaboration. The editor’s pairing of Buju’s freestyle with SZA’s instrumental is what created the moment now generating attention online.
And judging by SZA’s response, the mashup clearly has the approval of at least one half of the unexpected musical pairing.
The combination works particularly well because Buju’s commanding, melodic delivery sits comfortably against the relaxed R&B backdrop, giving his freestyle an entirely different atmosphere without losing its Jamaican character.
Fans also embraced the edit, filling the comments with fire emojis and praise as the clip circulated online.
“Go Gina” is the seventh track on SZA’s critically acclaimed debut studio album, Ctrl, released on June 9, 2017.
The song was produced by Carter Lang and Scum, with additional production from Frank Dukes. Its title draws on the popular phrase “Damn, Gina!” associated with Gina Waters, the character played by Tisha Campbell on the 1990s sitcom Martin. On the track, SZA explores the idea of loosening up, stepping away from an overly cautious mindset and allowing herself greater freedom.
“Go Gina” also incorporates elements connected to the Pepper Ann theme song, written by Kathrine Wilhoite and Brian Woodbury for the Disney animated series.
Although “Go Gina” was not released as a traditional standalone radio single, it has accumulated significant consumption through streaming and the continued popularity of Ctrl. The track has earned certification milestones in several markets, including Platinum in the United States, as well as Gold certifications in Canada and New Zealand.
