“Never Complain,” the first collaboration between dancehall stars Teejay and Masicka, has ascended to No. 1 on Apple Music in Jamaica, marking another significant milestone for the Warner Music artist. Teejay revealed exclusively to World Music Views that the track serves as the lead single for his debut album, titled Reputation, which is slated for release next year.
In an interview, Teejay remarked, “I didn’t want to tell anybody this, but the song with Masicka is actually the first track from my album. I’ll be releasing follow-up singles, though not all will feature on the album. But this one is the official start.” Reputation will follow his debut EP I Am Chippy, which debuted at No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Reggae Albums Chart, selling over 1000 in its first week and 15,000 units during its lifetime in the U.S., according to Luminate.
The collaboration had its genesis at the Island Music Conference in February, where Teejay expressed an impromptu desire to work with Masicka, who is signed to the New York based Def Jam Records.
Teejay shared his respect for Masicka, explaining, “I respect the G—his energy and talent. From one strong artist to another, it’s mutual.” He noted that their differing musical styles complement each other on the track: “I’m a singer, while Masicka brings a hardcore deejay vibe, along with a singjay style.”
Beyond Jamaica, Never Complain has made a strong impact across the Caribbean, reaching No. 2 in Antigua and Barbuda, No. 5 in both the Cayman Islands and Grenada, and No. 6 in Saint Kitts and Nevis. The track continues to gain traction, ranking No. 12 in Guyana and No. 13 in St. Vincent and The Grenadines, underscoring the broad appeal of Teejay’s upcoming album. On YouTube, the single has claimed the No. 3 spot in Jamaica, highlighting its local popularity.
On iTunes, the track holds the No. 4 position in Saint Kitts and Nevis and is charting across other Caribbean markets, including No. 32 in Grenada and No. 9 in the Cayman Islands. Deezer listeners in Jamaica are also showing strong support, where it holds the No. 2 position.
Reflecting on the song’s creation, Teejay added, “I focused on the singing, the hook, the melody, to create a blend with Masicka’s aggressive delivery.”
Teejay’s most streamed single “Drift” has surpassed 22 million streams on Spotify.
