“The Culture Comes First”: CJ Milan Talks Building Historic Dancehall Moments, Leading Bounty Killer’s Return at Barclays, and Breaking Barriers for Women in Promotion

In a genre powered by energy, legacy, and resilience, CJ Milan has quietly become the force behind some of dancehall’s most historic live moments. Following her triumphant execution of three sold-out Vybz Kartel arena events—Milan is now preparing to deliver another groundbreaking show: Bounty Killer’s first full-scale band performance in a New York City Arena.

“This is a warlord show,” Milan tells World Music Views with passion. “It’s not just a party. This is poor people governor, this is history. So we’re giving you a stage show—full band, full fire, high production.”

The show, set for U.S. Independence weekend on July 5 at Barclays Center, promises to fuse Bounty Killer’s militant catalog with a massive, theatrical experience. Milan is stepping outside her usual formula, noting that while she rarely works with bands on her Reggaefest shows, this performance will be “a first” and “a statement.”

“I sent the first drawing back—I didn’t like it,” she admits. “I’ve got a vision in my head, and I won’t stop until the team brings it to life. I want the best of both worlds: high-level stage production with that raw live energy. This one means something different.”

“The Culture Comes First”

Operating out of Manhattan, CJ Milan’s meteoric rise in dancehall promotion is no accident. A passionate advocate for the genre, she credits her success to a blend of hard work, knowing her audience, and always putting the culture first.

“I think the artists feel how much I care,” she says. “I’m not just putting on shows. I’m building moments. I’m building energy that they feed off.”

Milan’s approach has already paid off. Her Kartel events shattered expectations, drawing thousands of fans into packed arenas in New York and Atlanta, even amidst logistical chaos and tight venue protocols. One of those shows helped push the song “Shake It To The Max” to Billboard Hot 100 chart success after a now-iconic live moment.

“That was Moliy’s idea,” Milan reveals. “But when Shenseea came out and the crowd screamed like that—it was a different kind of energy. I’ve never seen a crowd sing a song like that word-for-word (to a new song). That’s when I knew we had helped shift something in real time.”

Bounty Killer at Barclays: A Family Affair

While Bounty Killer is known for his aggressive stage persona, Milan says this show is “a family affair.”

“A good friend of mine said his mom and her friends are coming in a group chat,” she says with a laugh. “Then he saw who else was on the bill (Masicka, Mavado and Aidonia) and said, ‘Okay, now I have to go.’ That’s what I love. We’re reaching everyone—from the hardcore fans to the elders to the younger generation.”

Bounty Killer’s international collaborations include The Fugees, DJ Khaled, Cham, Busta Rhymes, and Gwen Stefani — and with rumors swirling about surprise guests, Milan neither confirms nor denies. “That would be a moment,” she says with a smile. “But a lot of these people are global now — we’ll see.”

The Reality of Ticketing and the Economy

Despite the excitement surrounding the event, Milan remains clear-eyed about the real challenges promoters face — especially in today’s tough economic climate.

“People are holding onto their money until the week of,” she explains. “I noticed that, people are uncertain, the economy is not the best right now and people just want to make sure they are good. I have to cut back, we have to meet them halfway. Sometimes I drop prices by $20 or $30 just to make it accessible because these Ticketmaster and venue fees are high.”

It’s this kind of adaptability that sets Milan apart in a competitive industry. “I could list a $59 ticket but by the time they get that ticket it could be $99. So I think as promoters we have to fall back a little bit and work with our people. I’ll eat an hour of overtime if I have to,” she adds. “I’d rather lose a little than have people feel locked out of the culture.”

Why Aren’t More Women Headlining?

As a woman in a male-dominated dancehall ecosystem, Milan is well aware of the hurdles her gender brings. When asked why there aren’t more women headlining arena shows like the Bounty Killers or Popcaans of the world, she’s honest.

“You gotta work five times harder to even be taken seriously,” she says. “People still dismiss me. But I keep pushing, because I know I’m not the last. There are young women watching what I’m doing—and I want to set a blueprint.”

She points to Shenseea and Spice as examples of women carrying the genre, but says the industry needs to do more to elevate them. “Why wasn’t ‘Shake It To The Max’ performed at the BET Awards? That’s one of the hottest records out.”

Looking Ahead to 2026 and Beyond

With eyes on 2026, Milan teases even more ambitious plans, possibly including shows with younger stars like Masicka, Alkaline, and Aidonia on the same weekend—a once unimaginable lineup.

“Dancehall is in good hands,” she says. “These guys are hungry, and the fans are showing up. But radio, DJs—they need to push too. These artists are doing it off pure talent and social media. No major label backing. No radio budgets. Just vibes.”

And as for the idea of a Beenie Man and Bounty Killer joint show?

“That’s up to them,” Milan says with a knowing smile. “But if they’re ready? I’ll make it happen.”

Tickets for Bounty Killer’s return show at Barclays Center are available now via Ticketmaster and ReggaeFest.com.
