Third World Covers Sting’s “Fields of Gold,” Produced by Reggae Legend Clive Hunt

Legendary reggae band Third World has officially released their latest single, “Fields of Gold,” a reggae-infused take on the classic hit by Sting. Produced by Jamaican music icon Clive Hunt, the track is part of a joint project with Hunt’s Iconic Azul Music and California-based Ineffable Records.

Now available on all major streaming platforms, the song offers a fresh reggae twist on the beloved original.“Fields of Gold” is a song by English musician Sting from his 1993 album Ten Summoner’s Tales. Released as a single on June 7, 1993, it reached No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100, with higher success in Canada (No. 2) and Iceland (No. 6). Co-produced by Sting and Hugh Padgham, the song features harmonica by Brendan Power and Northumbrian smallpipes by Kathryn Tickell. Inspired by the barley fields surrounding Sting’s Wiltshire home, the song is a reflective love ballad. It received widespread critical acclaim, with Billboard calling it “deeply alluring” and AllMusic ranking it as a classic. Paul McCartney later admitted he wished he had written the song.

A Collaboration Rooted in Musical Excellence

Speaking on the project, Clive Hunt expressed his excitement about working with Third World once again:

“This is part of a major Sting project. It’s always an honour to work with a band as iconic as Third World. ‘Fields of Gold’ is a song that transcends generations, and we wanted to bring out the soul and depth of it through reggae. I believe this version will touch hearts worldwide, just as the original did.”

Third World’s guitarist and Musical Director, Cat Coore, also shared his enthusiasm:

“We’ve always had a great relationship with Clive Hunt. He’s been the Producer on quite a few Third World songs and he’s been a friend for many years. It was a pleasure recording this song ‘Fields of Gold’ with Clive, one of Sting’s classics and perhaps his best song. Right now, Third World is in a position where we are doing one-off projects, and we’re proud to associate with Clive, who is one of Jamaica’s best Producers.”

A Legacy of Reggae Innovation

For over five decades, Third World has been at the forefront of reggae music, fusing the genre with R&B, soul, and funk influences. With timeless hits like “96 Degrees in the Shade” and “Now That We Found Love,” the band has cemented itself as one of reggae’s most influential acts.

With “Fields of Gold,” Third World continues to push the boundaries of reggae, reinterpreting a classic with authenticity and soul.
