Canadian singer Tory Lanez has been sentenced to ten years in prison after he was found guilty in December for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
The 31-year-old, known legally as Daystar Peterson, received his sentence on Tuesday August 8, following multiple delays. Judge David Herriford was initially set to announce Lanez’s sentence on Monday. However, the proceedings extended into a two-day marathon due to extensive arguments from both sides’ attorneys about various aspects of his potential sentence.
Legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff who reported from Los Angeles court room said in a tweet,
“Tory spoke for several minutes. He said he still cares about Megan. He called her ‘someone I still care for dearly to this day’ regardless of what she may think of him. He said ‘the victim’s my friend.’ He talked about bonding with her over the loss of their mothers.”
In court Lanez also said about the shooting: “I said some very immature things that I shouldn’t have said. I revealed some secrets I shouldn’t have revealed.”
The judge allowed seven witnesses, including Lanez’s father and the mother of his 6-year-old son, to provide statements in support of Lanez. On Monday, Megan delivered a victim impact statement, which Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta read, expressing that she has been forever changed by the incident and will never be the same.
Lanez’s sentencing hearing was initially planned for January, but it was rescheduled due to his hiring of new attorneys. The hearing was postponed again when his legal team filed a motion for a new trial, which was ultimately denied in May.
In a written statement, Megan conveyed that she has been enduring daily struggles since Lanez shot her in the feet three years ago.
“I have not known a single day of peace since the defendant’s brutal shooting,” Megan stated in the statement read by Ta on Monday. “While I am gradually healing and recovering, I will never be the same.”
