The reggae and dancehall fraternity has been left in shock following the death of recording artist and actor Ras Ajai, with an outpouring of grief flooding social media from fellow musicians, promoters and fans.
Among those paying tribute was Morgan Heritage member Gramps Morgan, who wrote: “Nooooo condolences to his entire family.”
Singer Jesse Royal expressed disbelief at the news, posting: “What?!????”
Singer Aiesha Barrett described the loss as difficult to process, writing: “RIP Bro, this one hard to swallow.”
Fans who remembered Ajai’s performance as Claude Massop in the film Bob Marley: One Love also shared their condolences. “I went to watch the movie at Universal Studios. Yes, I remember him. Sad indeed. Rest in Zion mi lion,” one supporter wrote.
Event promoter Eaton of Jamrock Events Colorado reflected on Ajai’s ambition and determination, describing him as “a very motivated general” who constantly sought opportunities to bring music tours to new audiences.
“He spoke highly of the opportunities he got with Sean and the gang to touch the stages,” the promoter added.
Others highlighted the artist’s character as much as his talent. “This is absolutely horrific and I’m heartbroken over the passing of a real general,” one tribute read. “Such a positive energy and powerful spirit. Rest in peace my brother.”
Fans also struggled to come to terms with the loss, with many initially believing the reports were false. “Wait what? No… please tell me this is a rumour,” one commenter wrote, while another described Ajai as “special” and said that he “will never be forgotten.”
Ajai worked with Sean Paul during his career and Sean Paul’s Manager Steve posted: “This is Absolutely horrific and I’m heartbroken 💔 over the passing of a real General. Such a positive energy & powerful spirit. 🕊️ rest in peace my brother @rasajaimusic”
