Billboard chart topping artist Tyla is working on new music with a Jamaican artist according to people familiar with the matter. The song, set to appear on the South African star’s debut album was recorded recently the people said.
Tyla, 21, was seen hanging out at Kingston Dub Club on Sunday night after spending a week recording music along with her team at Geejam Studios in Portland.
While Tyla is yet to publicly make mentioned of who the dancehall artist is, the singer who is having a cross-cultural moment with her hit ‘Water’ recently confirmed with Cosmopolitan that she wants to collaborate with K-Pop group BlackPink.
“I would love to collaborate with Blackpink. It would be so cute!” She said. Adding, “Years back, I kept watching the “Kill This Love” video. I loved watching their stuff. And the way K-Pop stans are, that whole world is so beautiful. I’d love to visit Asia also and just experience it.“
The Zulu, Indian and Dutch singer’s breakout hit ‘Water’ spends a fourth week at the top of the Billboard Afrobeats chart and the song now makes her the highest charting lead female African artist on the Billboard Hot 100 this century after peaking at No. 21 last week, up from No. 46 the previous week. The highest charting song by a South African musical act in 19 years since Seether ‘”Broken” which peaked at No. 20 in 2004.
Tyla said she admires Billboard chart topping artist Tems, “I really look up to Tems, because she’s a crazy artist and writer. Her voice and the way she carries herself is so beautiful. She’s done a lot for African music and African artists.”
“Water” slips to No. 35 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart dated November 10.
Her 2022 track “To Last” makes an entry on this week’s Billboard Afrobeats chart at No. 44 and “Girl Next Door” with Nigerian singer Ayra Starr stays at No. 39.
Elsewhere, “Water” is the most Shazammed song in the United Arab Emirates and the music video has surpassed 32 million streams on YouTube.
She tells Cosmo that she wants to be a Pop Star of all time from Africa referring to herself in third person.
“I would just want her to say that Tyla is the biggest pop star of my time. Because I want that pop star to be from Africa. That’s really something that I want in general and for myself.”
