Tyla‘s chart-topping sensation, “Water,” is officially Platinum certified, as declared by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 16. The infectious track, released in July 2023, not only celebrated its 14th week on the Billboard Hot 100 but also climbed to an impressive No. 7 position making Tyla the youngest South African to hit top ten and the first South African soloist in 55 years to grace the prestigious chart.
Taking cues from the dance along Amapiano genre and a homage to Tyla’s Johannesburg roots, “Water” gained immense popularity on TikTok, thanks to a rump shaking water splashing viral dance routine. The Sammy Soso-produced track received an international boost when Houston’s own Travis Scott contributed to a remix, further propelling its global success.
Tyla is set to make her debut performance at Coachella on Friday, April 12th & 19th. The other African stars son the two weekend Coachella lineup include Tems and DJ SPINALL.
In a recent interview with Apple Music, 21-year-old Tyla expressed her astonishment at how “Water” had transformed her life, stating, “It’s so crazy how a song can change your life like this. It’s beautiful.” She shared her excitement about the positive reception of her music, emphasizing her joy in bringing South African sounds to a global audience.
“Water” serves as the lead single from Tyla’s much-anticipated self-titled debut album. Scheduled for release on March 1 via Fax and Epic Records, the album features other Billboard Afrobeats charting tracks like “Butterflies,” “Truth Or Dare,” and “On and On.” Tyla, speaking to Zane Lowe, explained her choice to make the album self-titled as a clean introduction to the world, expressing her desire for people to know her name and sound through this debut project. “For now, my introduction to the world, I just wanted to be clean,” she said on the Apple Music interview.
Water is now Certified old in the UK for selling 400,000 units in that country according to Chart Data.
