Comedian Aurie Styla has seen an uptick in his social media engagement after his comedic set mimicking several dancehall artists went viral on social media. In a video viewed 1.4 million times on TikTok, the UK comedian says in “Old School dancehall you know who is who by their voice, you don’t even have to read the label, Buju sounds like he fell asleep at the end of each track,” he then proceeded to imitate the the Stamina Daddy artist toasting style.
He poked fun at Elephant Man’s signature lisp saying the ‘Pom Di Riva’ deejay’s list will put a ‘s’ even on where none is neede “you know we look good(s),” he mimicked.
He had comedic chops for incarcerated artist Vybz Kartel saying the Portmore Empire leader is his favorite because he was usually clear and articulate, but says now, you can tell he is in prison because Kartel’s cadence changed to a whisper as if he is looking for the warden after singing every line.
Due to the popularity of the first clip, the comedian posted another clip which now has 1.1 million views on TikTok he takes jabs at the 1980 dancehall artist whose scat singing, ad-libs and ability to improvise turn into popular songs.
“These man, they were just happy to get on the microphone and then at least get out the ghetto, but it was still a vibe,” Aurie explained.
“You had a song like Zungu Zung Zuggu Zunguzeng, that is the name of a song by Yellow man, then he get into the chorus, and nothing made sense.” he quips.
The UK audience was well entertained when Aurie dissected Guinney Pepper’s 2008 song ‘Lick The Chalice,’ produced by Produced by Rowen Johnson, Tremma House and Clive Hunt.
“We lick the chalice men the water go so,” as he mimicked and made comedic assumptions about Pepper’s writing process to the delight of the audience.
