Fast-rising dancehall artiste Valiant, has firmly stamped his mark on the genre with his debut mixtape, 4:14. The significance of the title, the birth of his son as the viral breakthrough sensation sets the tone for an impressive run.
Released first on Audiomack, the mixtape is produced by Diplomat Records, DJ Mac, and DJ Biigy peaked at No. 1 on Apple Music Jamaica. It’s easy to tell what the 20-track mixtape expects to achieve as dancehall’s newest star boasts a new set of melodies that cater to both the TikTok hungry youth, and demonstrates his intention to connect with his fans outside Jamaica.
“Regular Day,” the mixtape’s opening track, sets the tone for what’s to come, with Valiant effortlessly downplaying a lavish lifestyle as an everyday affair. Imagine Dennis Brown singing hustler music, songs for the ladies, and motivational anthems. Then open your eyes and see its only Valiant’s undeniable vocals drawing listeners deeper into the make-belief pseudo-reality he and his peers create and occupy.
At times it seems Valiant is in a struggle between gimmickry and serious storytellers but his penchant for being on key gives him wiggle room for short terms subject errors.
One standout track is “Shake,” featuring Serani and Rotimi. This infectious collaboration is an instant hit, captivating listeners from the very first listen. The chemistry between the artists is palpable, resulting in a catchy and memorable song.
Kranium, Chronic Law, Leaha, and others add an extra layer of depth to the project. Valiant’s ability to blend his style seamlessly with others demonstrates his adaptability as an artist.
