New reggae talents Jermi and Renae from St. Catherine, Jamaica, are finding their way in the industry. The two are managed by veteran producer Clive Hunt under his Azul label named after his alias.
Their debut single, “Mi Caan’t,” is attracting considerable attention.
Jermi’s journey began with a revelatory performance at St. Catherine High School’s founders’ day celebration. The audience’s reaction ignited his passion for music. Renae’s path was influenced by her love for performing arts, nurtured through singing in church. Her style blends reggae, gospel, and jazz, shaped by her background in theatre arts.
Their single, “Mi Caan’t,” set for release on June 7 via Ineffable Records is a re-write of Barrington Levy’s classic “My Woman” featuring Clive Hunt as a co-writer, tells the story of young lovers struggling with relationship stress yet unable to part ways. Hunt highlights their unique ability to blend sounds, with Jermi’s musicianship and Renae’s vocals creating a style that appeals across generations.
The song is about two young lovers who are complaining about the stress of their relationship but just can’t seem to stay away from each other.
According to Clive Hunt, “Jermi and Renae were perfect for the song because of their seamless ability to blend their sounds, creating a unique and relatable style.” He highlighted Jermi’s background as a trombonist and musician, combined with Renae’s exceptional vocals, forming a distinctive sound that appeals to a wide audience, from Gen Z to Boomers.
Jermi added that, “being signed to the Iconic Azul team and working with Clive Hunt is an experience that is both promising and life-changing as a new young artiste.” Renae added that it “has been a transformative experience, providing her with the support and encouragement she needs to pursue her dreams in the entertainment industry.”
With the release of “Mi Caan’t,” Jermi and Renae are poised for a successful future, committed to their artistic vision and high-quality music.
