Vybz Kartel Spotted at PNP’s 86th Annual Conference
Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel made a surprise appearance today at the People’s National Party (PNP)’s 86th annual conference at the National Arena. The deejay, who was recently released from prison after serving 12 years and 10 months, appeared onstage alongside his lawyer, Isat Buchanan, a PNP member and former chairman of the party’s Human Rights Commission.
Kartel’s presence quickly drew attention of the packed arena, causing a stir as the conference DJ played several of his more aggressive hits, including “We Nuh Fraida Nuh Baddi.” The artist raised his fist in the PNP’s signature salute, flashing his iconic three-finger Gaza symbol, while the crowd erupted with emotion. Buchanan, who also delivered a speech at the conference, had to urge the crowd to settle down, saying, “Greetings all, I just want to tell everybody that everything we do is guided by God and time. And that time is now. For this conference, the message I want to send is that we are fighting for the future of this country.”
Kartel, who did not give a speech at the conference was previously spotted leaving the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre on August 31, wearing orange kerchiefs—a color synonymous with the PNP. This marks Kartel’s first appearance at a large political gathering since his release, though he recently made waves at the MBJ Airport after returning from a trip to Panama.
After his on stage appearance Kartel spoke with Anthony Miller of ER and said, “I am not psychic but you know we just deh here fi represent for out people at this time politically and you know the Vybz is nice so a deh so the thing deh.” Miller asked what Kartel would change about Jamaica politically at this time to which he answered, “no what bothers me and what disturbs me a the same sentiment as the people weh deh right yah suh share, thats why I am here, so Missa Golding will make it clear.”
Since his release, Kartel has expressed interest in entering representational politics, citing the neglect of basic needs by current representatives. His appearance today has fueled speculation about his political ambitions. Hardcore Kartel fans are already aware of his leaning toward the PNP, further amplifying the significance of his attendance at the conference.
Kartel’s appearance comes a year after reggae star Buju Banton made a cameo at the party’s 85th conference, following his release from prison. Maroon Chief Richard Curry was also on stage with Vybz Kartel.
Currently, Kartel is the number one trending act on YouTube in Jamaica, following the release of his first official music video titled The Comet less than 24 hours ago. Additionally, the dancehall icon is preparing for his much-anticipated return concert, Freedom Streetz, set for December 31 at the National Stadium.
With his music topping the charts and his public appearances drawing significant attention, Kartel’s influence remains strong. His presence at the PNP conference is both symbolic and potentially influential in shaping Jamaica’s socio-political landscape.
