The 2023 NBA All Star Weekend came to a close on Sunday with a Game Halftime performance by Teams, Rema and Burna Boy. The performance started off with Burna who took the Salt Lake City crowd to Africa with his Afrofusion set including Alone, Last Last and Its Plenty to the delight of the basketball fans.
For GoogLe’s Year in Search 2022, the 10th ‘most searched song was Burna Boy’s “Last Last.”
The song was released in May of this year as the lead single for his 6th solo album “Love Damini” on Atlantic Records/Spaceship label. Since selling out two nights in Madison Square Garden, the African Giant has opened up himself to new audiences in America and across the world which has increased a global demand for his tour.
The breakup anthem Last Last, exploded after he first performed it at the Billboard Music Awards in May, samples Tony Braxton’s Darkchild produced “Wasn’t Man Enough.”
Burna, real name Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, told hosts Gillie and Wallo of Million Dollars Worth Of Game Podcast that he pays 60% of the publishing to Braxton but it was worth it.
“I just wanted to use that sample, and I knew Chopstix(Producer) could do sumn crazy with it, so yeah, I just pointed that shit out and just take it from there , that’s one of the special creative processes ever,” he explained.
Rema came on second and brought the house down with his Afro-fusion hits “Calm Down,” and “Holiday,” before Tems took over with a medley of “Crazy Tings,”, “Free Mind,” and “Essence.”
The Billboard Hot 100 singer had the crowd singing word for word has she “did her thing,” song after song and incorporating the “butterfly dance” into her set to screaming fans. With her voice sounding live exactly how it sounds on the record, Tems sang her verse from her hit “Higher” which was sampled for her Future and Drake collab “I will Wait For You.”
The Nigerian singer racked up a slew of hits last year in the U.S. when her Black Panther Wakander Forever soundtrack cover of Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart. The song also debuts at No. 7 on the Billboard Afrobeats songs chart.
Tems won her first Grammy at the the 2023 awards for Best Melodic Rap Performance with her Future and Drake collaboration “Wait for U.” She’s nominated for the 2023 Oscar for Best Original Song for her writing on Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up,” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Soundtrack.
