Following her US late night show debut last week on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Tyla’s “Water” has now surpassed 100 Million streams on Spotify. It is the South African star’s first song to reach the milestone and the first African song released this year to earn the achievement, surpassing Davido’s “Unavailable” featuring Musa Keys (95M).
“Water” is set to impact US radio on Tuesday after peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Global 200 chart on Monday.
As the song climbs the charts to crossover status, Tyla tells i-D Mag in July, that her goal is to represent her country, “I’m very passionate about my country, our culture and music; I really believe in it. ”
It’s the first ever Top 10 entry by A South African artist on Spotify’s Global chart.
#Tyla has also hit 1 billion on TIkTok with millions of videos shared doing the Water Challenge the platform including a pregnant R&B singer Ciara.
The song will enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart top 5 next week, up from No. 22 this week.
“Water” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 67 in early October, becoming the first solo song by a South African musician to appear on the chart since Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” in 1968 per Insider.
