‘Water’ by Tyla has surpassed 1 million units in streams and sales in the US according to Chart Data. The info was released on Saturday December 9 via the respected music publications social media. This achievement renders water eligible for Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association Of America(RIAA).
The song spends a tenth week on the Billboard Hot 100 this week after peaking at No. 10.
‘Water’ is the fist song by an African artist released in 2023 to selling one million units and it will become the South African singer’s first RIAA certified Platinum song.
The 21 year old signed a seven figure publishing deal with Sony Records according to sources close to the matter and announced on twitter that her debut album ‘Tyla’ is schedule for early 2024 via FAX Records, under exclusive license to Epic Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
On Friday Tyla kicked off the three day music festival ‘Hey Neighbour Festival‘ which marks its debut on South African soil, featuring international artists like H.E.R., Khalid, and Kendrick Lamar.
Homegrown talents such as Musa Keys, Focalistic, Anatii, Zakes Bantwini, and A-Reece are poised to captivate the Pretoria audience.
Tyla and Nasty C, along with American electronic DJ duo The Chainsmokers, set things off on the festival’s opening day.

In light of her International success Tyla wants everyone to know that her cultural heritage is at the forefront of her global experience. She gave a speech at the end of her performance at “Hey Neighbor” saying, ” thank you guys for coming, thank you guys for all the support. I am repping the country everywhere I go, I am so happy to see you guys and I hope I am making you guys proud.”
She also recently told fellow South African Trevor Noah in Interview Magazine she hopes people understand what amapiano has done for South Africans: “I know people are loving the sound, which is amazing, but to South Africans, it’s not just a genre. It’s in our souls…It’s given people so many jobs and allowed South Africans to travel the world. And people don’t know that the producers making these banging amapiano beats are 18-year-old kids in their bedrooms. It’s so beautiful to see.”
