She is an island girl with with a big city flavor and her music is as fresh as her features. Her NPR Tiny Desk submission is up to par and Mia Taylor tells WMV how she got into the music business using her home studio as the stomping ground for her creative juices.
How did you get started in the music industry, and what inspired you to pursue a career in music?
When I was 14 I met my mentor Cocoa Sarai. She taught me the difference between being a singer and an artist. I recorded my first song with her in her living room. And after that moment, I knew I wanted to be an artist. My grandfather has also been my biggest musical inspiration. Growing up I lived in a household that played soca R&B. These two genera has his heavily impacted my sound today!
Can you tell us about your creative process when writing and producing your music?
My creative process always has to be peaceful! I love to be surrounded by good vibes and energy. I always start with a melody
Your single “Mango” has a buzz – what was the inspiration behind the song and its lyrics?
I made ‘Mango’ with one of my best friends summer of 2020 in my room. I was in a situationship with a guy who told me we couldn’t be together because he needed to work on himself. And he ended up being in a relationship a few months later. My feelings were hurt so I had to find a way to get over him. Summer is coming and I didn’t want to be in my sad girl bag so I had to let the man go.
Who are some of your musical influences, and how have they inspired your own sound and style?
Some of my musical influences are Lauryn Hill, Snoh Aalegra, Destra, Sade and Tems.
Can you share any details about your upcoming projects or collaborations in the works?
Right now I’m just in the process of creating music and practicing my craft.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians and singers who are just starting in the industry?
Just keep going even when you think nobody’s watching.
You have a very unique voice and style – how did you develop your signature sound, and what sets you apart from other artists in the industry?
I’m still finding my voice and practicing being authentically me.
Can you tell us about any challenges you have faced in your career so far, and how you have overcome them?
Some challenges I’ve faced was lack of patience with myself. I’ve overcome them by continuing to work consistently on my goals and my passion which is music.
Your music has a very upbeat and positive vibe – how important is it for you to convey positive messages through your music?
It’s very important! I want my music to continue to resonate and make people happy.
Finally, what can fans expect from you in the future, and what are your long-term career goals as a musician?
They can expect more and more music! My long-term goal as a musician is to continue to make music and tell stories that will resonate with people all over the world.
