“You Are” reflects a message of empowerment, highlighting themes of self-discovery and resilience, with the lyrics focusing on the power individuals have in shaping their own destinies.

The song is inspired by Iyanu, an animated series centered around a young orphan in mythical Yorubaland who discovers her divine powers and embarks on a heroic journey. The series is based on the award-winning graphic novel created by Roye Okupe and published by YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics.

“Music has always been a powerful way to tell our stories, and ‘You Are’ is a song that speaks to our strength and divine power,” said Yemi Alade. “It’s an anthem for anyone discovering their own greatness. Being part of Iyanu is an honor, especially since the series is rooted in Nigerian mythology. This is for every young dreamer who believes in their destiny.”

You Are is written and produced by Michael Hodges, with writer’s credits going to Yemi herself, Kayla Morrison, Gerald Trottman, and Ghian Wright.

Hodges, a Grammy-nominated artist and co-CEO of Alcon Sleeping Giant (ASG), spoke highly of Alade’s contribution to the song. “Yemi’s vocals brought a unique energy and emotion to the track. It was a privilege to work with her on this project,” he said.

Roye Okupe, creator, executive producer, and showrunner of Iyanu, shared the emotional connection he feels to the collaboration. “As a Nigerian storyteller, seeing Iyanu come to life has been a dream realized. Yemi Alade’s ‘You Are’ captures the essence of the show—strength, resilience, and the magic of our heritage,” he said.

Lion Forge Entertainment produced the lyric video, which features exclusive footage from the upcoming series Iyanu.

“We are passionate about bringing diverse, authentic stories to life, and Iyanu is a perfect example of that mission,” said Dave Steward II, CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment. “Music plays a crucial role in storytelling, and Yemi Alade’s ‘You Are’ adds to the heart of Iyanu. We look forward to sharing the magic of this series with audiences.”

Iyanu premieres on Cartoon Network on April 5 at 9:30 AM ET/PT, and will be available for streaming on Max starting April 6. The full first season will also be released on Showmax in 44 African countries on June 13.
