TORONTO, CANADA — YG Marley’s breakout hit Praise Jah In The Moonlight has officially been certified Double Platinum in Canada, surpassing 160,000 units in sales and streaming equivalents, according to Music Canada. The milestone adds to the historic impact of the record, which has now achieved multi-platinum status across several countries.
Canada’s certification criteria for singles are based on a combination of sales and streams. Units for Single Awards are calculated as follows:
-
1 unit for each digital or physical single sale
-
1 unit for every 160 eligible Premium On-Demand Audio/Video streams
-
1 unit for every 240 eligible Ad-Supported On-Demand Audio/Video streams
The Canadian certification comes after the song also made history in the United States, where it was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on November 22, 2024, for sales and streams exceeding 1 million units. It is the first song by a reggae artist to go Platinum in the U.S. since 2017, when Skrillex and Damian Marley’s ‘Make It Bun Dem’ achieved the same feat.
Additionally, the single makes YG Marley the youngest reggae artist to earn a Platinum certification in the U.S. The track was previously certified Gold in June 2024 for crossing 500,000 units.
Written by YG’s mother Lauryn Hill, Praise Jah In The Moonlight samples Bob Marley’s “Crisis” and peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining on the chart for 13 weeks. Internationally, the song has also been certified Platinum in New Zealand, Silver in the UK (as of July 19), and reached No. 1 in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. With over 379 million streams on Spotify, it is the most streamed reggae track in the last five years.
Born Joshua Omaru “YG” Marley, the 22-year-old is the son of Rohan Marley and grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley. He is currently signed to WME (William Morris Endeavor), a leading Hollywood talent agency, and has recently collaborated with Grammy-nominated Afrobeats star Davido on the single Awuke.
Rohan Marley reacted to the milestone with pride, telling World Music Views, “That is amazing.” He later posted on social media:
“Positive Vibes My Son @ygmarley🦁 certified 1 MILLION for Praise Jah In The Moonlight 🔥.”
YG’s creative roots run deep. He began modeling in 2017, with appearances in Urban Outfitters campaigns and Teen Vogue alongside his sister. His industry buzz began in 2018 when he posted a Snapchat snippet of Drake’s “Nice for What,” which sampled his mother’s classic “Ex-Factor.”
