YG Marley‘s “Praise Jah In The Moonlight,” debuts at No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, it is the highest debut for a reggae single since “Bam” by Jay-Z featuring his uncle Damian Marley debuted at No. 47 on July 29, 2017. “Bam” samples Jacob Miller’s Tenement Yard and Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam.”
“Praise Jah In The Moonlight,” is YG’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and features a vocal sample from YG’s grandfather Bob Marley & The Wailer’s “Crisis” form the 1978 “Kaya” album as well as his mother, Ms. Lauryn Hill. The song has moved up to a new peaked at No. 33 on the Canadian Hot 100 (55 last week). It had entered at No. 95 in its first week.
The song had debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart last week and has climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s New Zealand Songs chart after four weeks.
Co-written and co-produced by Ms. Lauryn Hill, the song has peaked at No. 81 on Spotify US and No. 75 on Spotify Global after gaining over 32 million Spotify plays since its December 27 release.
Released independently by YG Marley Music, it is the highest charting independent reggae song this century.
Born Joshua Omaru Marley, YG is the sole reggae act on the lineup for the recently announced 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
