“Brand Jamaica Belongs to the People”: Musicians’ Union Responds to Holness’ Beenie Man Comments

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Federation of Musicians and Affiliates Union (JFMAU) has issued a strongly worded statement expressing disappointment and concern over recent comments by Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness regarding Jamaican entertainers who promote Brand Jamaica internationally while publicly criticising issues affecting their homeland.

Holmes fired back at dancehall star Beenie Man over his criticism of the government’s Hurricane Melissa relief spending, calling his claims false and damaging to Jamaica’s reputation. Speaking at the reopening of Black River Hospital, Holness highlighted over $300 million spent on hospital repairs and a $3.8 billion investment in healthcare recovery. He urged public figures to recognize the government’s rebuilding efforts and help uplift Jamaica rather than tear down the country.

In its official statement, the union defended the contributions of Jamaican musicians, entertainers and cultural practitioners, arguing that their patriotism should not be questioned simply because they speak openly about national challenges.

The JFMAU described the Prime Minister’s remarks as deeply concerning and dismissive of the role entertainers have played in building Jamaica’s international reputation.

“Patriotism must never be confused with silence,” the federation stated.

The union argued that raising concerns about accountability, transparency, governance, disaster relief and the welfare of ordinary Jamaicans is an essential part of a healthy democracy.

According to the JFMAU, entertainers who use their international platforms to highlight problems facing Jamaica are exercising their right to free expression and demonstrating concern for their country’s future.

“To love Jamaica is to want better for its people,” the organisation declared, maintaining that responsible criticism can be an expression of genuine patriotism.

The federation further stressed that criticism of a government is not the same as criticism of Jamaica itself.

It insisted that no political leader, organisation or administration has exclusive authority to determine who is patriotic or who has the right to speak on behalf of the Jamaican people.

Union Invokes Legacy of Reggae Pioneers

In defending the entertainment industry, the JFMAU pointed to the historic contributions of Jamaican musical icons, including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown and Toots and the Maytals.

The union noted that these pioneering entertainers helped establish Jamaican music as a powerful international cultural force through their talent, sacrifices, struggles and determination.

Their contributions, the federation argued, laid the foundation for the global recognition and commercial value that Brand Jamaica enjoys today.

The reference to these legendary musicians also highlights the longstanding relationship between Jamaican popular music and social commentary.

From reggae’s emergence as a voice for the marginalised to its worldwide influence, Jamaican artistes have frequently addressed poverty, injustice, inequality and political accountability through their music.

“Brand Jamaica Belongs to the Jamaican People”

The federation also challenged any suggestion that Brand Jamaica belongs exclusively to the government or any particular administration.

“Brand Jamaica therefore belongs to the Jamaican people,” the union declared.
