Far East Movement’s “Like a G6” Hits 1 Billion Spotify Streams, 16 Years After Its Release

Far East Movement’s defining 2010 hit “Like a G6,” featuring The Cataracs and Dev, has reached the billion-stream threshold on Spotify, adding a major streaming-era milestone to one of the most successful electro-hop records of its generation.

The achievement arrives more than 16 years after the single’s original release and underscores the record’s unusually long life beyond the period in which it dominated pop radio and club playlists.

Public Spotify tracking data placed “Like a G6” at 998,749,744 streams as of September 25, 2026, when it was still generating approximately 390,000 plays per day. At that rate, the song was positioned to cross one billion streams within days.

Released on April 13, 2010 through Cherrytree and Interscope Records, “Like a G6” served as the lead single from Far East Movement’s third studio album, Free Wired. The track was recorded in 2009 and produced by The Cataracs, the production duo of Niles Hollowell-Dhar and David Singer-Vine. Its credited songwriters are Jae Choung, James Roh, Kevin Nishimura, Virman Coquia, Singer-Vine and Hollowell-Dhar.

Musically, the record sits squarely in the electro-hop and dance-rap sound that became a major force in mainstream pop at the beginning of the 2010s. Its sparse electronic production, heavy low end and instantly identifiable vocal refrain made it particularly effective as a club record, while its compact pop construction allowed it to cross decisively into Top 40 radio.

A central component of the record is Dev’s vocal. The hook originated from her song “Booty Bounce,” also produced by The Cataracs, and was incorporated into “Like a G6.”

The title itself became part of the song’s mythology. “G6” was conceived as a heightened private-jet reference. The writers were playing off the Gulfstream G4 designation and imagined a “G6” as something even more extravagant — essentially a shorthand for being exceptionally “fly.” The phrase subsequently became inseparable from the record.

From Internet Release to No. 1

Before its commercial release, Far East Movement uploaded “Like a G6” to YouTube in November 2009. What began as an internet-driven club record eventually became a major-label crossover hit.

By October 2010, it had reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song ultimately spent three non-consecutive weeks at the top of the chart. Contemporary reporting from Interscope noted that the record had already surpassed 1.4 million U.S. digital sales during the week in which it first reached No. 1, including 223,000 copies sold that week alone.

The achievement carried particular historical significance. Far East Movement became the first Asian American group to top the Billboard Hot 100, a distinction Billboard later reiterated in its coverage of the group.

The record was not limited to the United States. “Like a G6” reached No. 1 in New Zealand and entered the Top 10 in markets including Australia, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.

Its commercial certifications reflect that international reach. The song has been certified 4× Platinum in the United States, 4× Platinum in Canada and New Zealand, 3× Platinum in Australia, 2× Platinum in the United Kingdom and Brazil, and Platinum in Germany, alongside additional Gold certifications in several territories.
